(Received from Tom O'Connor, International Officer, Irish Handball Council)

The poem details the death of James I of Scotland on 20th February, 1437. To facilitate the playing of handball (probably Jeu de Paume) he had the exit from the cellar closed up. When the assassin came to murder him, this blocked exit prevented his escape. His maidservant, Catherine Douglas, attempted to stay the killers by using her arm to bar the door.

Fives Court from "Poems" 1990 by T E Brown (Clifton School)
Sometimes at night I stand within the court

Where I have played by day.
And still the walls are vibrant with the sport Of agile limbs that now their labours o'er,
To healthful sleep their strength resign -
But how of those who played with me langsyne
      And sleep for evermore.
