Letter received from Tim Chappel (Old Marlburian) 30th August 1992
Dear Mr Fenn
I was thumbing through a copy of S J Hogben’s, An Introduction to the History of the Islamic States of Northern Nigeria (1967, OUP, Ibadan) and came across the enclosed illustration, which might be of interest. Hogben, an Education Officer, introduced Eton Fives to Nigeria.
The forword to this book is written by the former Sardauna of Sokoto, Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello, G.C.O.N., K.B.E., LL.D., was assassinated during the first Nigerian coup in January 1966. Giving three reasons why it is such a pleasure to commend this book to the general public, the Sardauna gives his second reason, the fact that Mr Hogben was responsible for introducing Fives to Northern Nigeria. He goes on: ‘Not only is this my favourite recreation but it is a game which has continued to grow in popularity in many parts of the country and has given pleasure and relaxation to thousands of people both young and old.’
A discerning gentleman, no doubt.
Yours sincerely
Tim Chappel
