ONE WALL FIVES - EVERY TUESDAY 8PM-10PM WESTWAY
Details of the
Ladder Competition
Forthcoming Events:
One Wall Quickfire Doubles: Planned for Saturday 17th May - Westway POSTPONED
Another new gig for Henry Staunton, the former finance director of Granada Group and ITV who's now one of those plural businessmen. He started work yesterday as a non-executive at The Merchant Trust, which adds to a portfolio that includes slots on the boards of Ladbrokes and Legal & General.
One fact I recall about Staunton is that he's one of the few people in the country to have played Eton Fives - a game dating back to the 1820s that involves throwing a ball against walls. I read that the pastime is "often associated in the proletarian mind with a censorious upbringing and regular birchings", although Staunton seems to prefer more sedate pastimes.
"I'm not sure he's played any Fives recently," says his spokesman. "He's more into his golf, now that he's so close to collecting his bus pass."
The outcome of League Division II depended on the result of this match. A win to the Olavians saw them take the league title for 2007-2008. Highgate School were in the lead for most of the year and to finish in second place is a most creditable perfomance in this their first season in the league.
This was Kerry's ninth win in the past ten years. Peter Cohen presented the winners trophy to Kerry and Dominique - their 9th and 4th championship wins respectively.
Mixed Championship:
Twenty-two pairs took part. Many individuals made a large commitment to be there; travelling from far and wide: Manchester, Brighton, Fleetwood, Shrewsbury and Ipswich - one player from Switzerland. It was particularly pleasing to welcome three pairs from St.Bartholemew's School, Newbury.
Semi-finals:
D Redmond & H Wiseman beat L Redmond & D Mew
12-3, 12-6

Gordon Stringer presented the Mixed Championship trophy to the winners, Charlotta and Seb Cooley. Charlotta has now won this Championship with two of her brothers.
President and Founder of the O.I. Eton Fives Club, Mike Fenn, was in the Chair and welcomed the guests. The Headmaster, Mr Ian Galbraith, proposed the toast to: Our guests and former Headmaster A K Watson, initiator of the game of Eton Fives at Ipswich. The Chairman of the Eton Fives Association, Mr Richard Barber OBE, responded on behalf of the guests and the Association
Earlier in the day the granddaughters of A K Watson unveiled a Centenary Plaque to commemorate the founding of the courts by their Grandfather. The ceremony included the naming of the the three courts after Arthur Watson (founder), Martin Shortland-Jones (former member of staff and responsible for the restoration of the courts in 1955) and Mike Fenn (founder of the Old Ipswichian Eton Fives Club in 1966). Peter Boughton (Bursar) introduced proceedings with a brief outline of Fives at Ipswich and background to naming of the courts. Mike Fenn responded on behalf of those being honoured. Anne Shortland-Jones was in attendance.
Following the formal unveiling ceremony a Centenary Match between an A K Watson XII and Headmaster of Bury St Edmunds' XII, the first match in 1908 having been played between A K Watson and the Headmaster of King Edward's Bury St Edmunds and a members of their staff. The Headmaster commenced the match by throwing the first ball. Unlike 1908 the Bury St Edmunds Staff triumphed 4-2.

I played on the courts on Saturday (22 March) and can confirm the Webmaster's note; the courts have three walls and are of an entirely plain construction, ie they have no step, buttress or ledges.
However, there are also two Rugby fives courts which, as far as I could tell from pacing them, are of the standard dimensions. They currently have no doors (they have doorways, but the doors are missing), roofs or boards (on the front wall). In an interesting variation, one of them has irregular lumps of stone fixed randomly on its walls; presumably so the pupils can practise rock climbing."

Final:
Summer Fields III beat Orley Farm II
6-12, 12-7, 12-6
A healthy entry of 55 pairs from 7 schools entered the competition. Pairs from Highgate dominated the pools stage, and they produced 22 of the 32 second round places. 2 pairs from Ludgrove and 1 each from Summer Fields and Cranleigh joined 4 Highgate pairs in the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals, Highgate’s first two pairs were both too good for Ludgrove and Summer Fields. In the final, Noble and Berriman used their height and strength to cut and volley effectively, but both Hosking and Willett played well and hit a better length to fully extend their first pair. In the end however, Highgate 1 proved themselves the stronger pair. A peculiarity of the competition was that every match was won 2-0.
ResultsWe were pleased to welcome Lancing and Westminster for the first time, and there were some very good matches leading up to the final round where St Olave's narrowly beat Westminster to clinch third place, and Highgate and Shrewsbury were locked in combat, both having secured maximum points thusfar. In a splendid contest all three pairs finished at one game apiece, and so the cup was shared.
1st= Highgate - 15 points
1st= Shrewsbury 15 points
3rd St Olave's - 9 points
4th Westminster - 8 points
5th Lancing - 1 point

Varsity Old Boys Match: Cambridge beat Oxford 2-0
The 2008 Old Boys Varsity match once again took place at Eton as a curtain raiser to the main event. After last year’s successful six pair contest, hopes were high for an equally strong turn out. Unfortunately, with at least 8 Cambridge pairs keen to play and despite the sterling efforts of the organisers, Oxford were unable to provide more than 2 pairs on the day.
Nevertheless, whatever was lacking in quantity was more than made up for by the quality of the play. At second pair, long overdue comebacks from Berkhamstedians Ed Ryder and Patrick Hennessy produced an entertaining encounter with Ryder and Nick Gill running out comfortable winners for Cambridge against Hennessy and Ewan Thompson. In the other court it quickly became clear that the first pair match was going to be a thriller. The first two games were shared 15-12 and 15-10 as Richard Tyler and Ross Bryan for Cambridge battled it out with James Toop and Sanjaya Ranasinghe for Oxford. In front of an ever increasing and highly appreciative crowd all four players produced some spectacular Fives to take the match into a fifth and final game. Oxford appeared to be home and dry as they raced into a 10-1 lead, but the Cambridge pair dug in, fought their way back and eventually held their nerve to take the decider 15-13.
We are very keen to keep this fixture going as an annual event and are therefore on the lookout for more players (of any standard!) who would like to take part next year, particularly on the Oxford side. If you’re interested, please contact Gareth Hoskins (garethjhoskins@yahoo.co.uk) or Sanjaya Ranasinghe (sanjaya.ranasinghe@gmail.com).

12-0, 12-0, 12-2
The early rounds were distinguished by the performance of the Old Ipswichians in beating first the Old Etonians and then the Old Cholmeleians to reach the semi-finals. They came up against a much weakened Old Harrovian team (neither Dunbar was available) who conceded the third pair, but were still strong enough to win the two pairs played. Meanwhile the Old Olavians beat the Old Salopians very comfortably in the other semi-final.
In the final, Tom Dunbar was still injured, which significantly weakened the Harrovian side, and Peter Cohen and David Mew duly won the third pair very easily. The first pair match started evenly, with Peter Dunbar and Jamie Fleming putting the Olavians under some early pressure, but Howard Wiseman and James Toop upped their game to take the crucial first game 12-8, and thereafter remained entirely in control to win comfortably in straight games. In the second pair, Peter White and Pauli Markannen narrowly won a close first game against Nick Shaw and Ross Bryan and the game was evenly poised at 10-9 to the Harrovians when a hand injury to Markannen forced a retirement. Thus the Olavians won the trophy for the fifth year in succession, and ninth time overall.
To-day marked the inauguration game of Quadra Terravista Fives, which has been named "Maybud Fives Court", in homage to Mr. Cyrus Maybud who has come from Europe with fifteen other players for this event, which occurred this morning (Feb/13/2008).
This court is located near to the Club House of the Terravista Golf Course, at the south of Bahia State, northeastern of Brazil. Dr.Michael Rumpf Gail, President of the Terravista Complex participated of this game. The court was built by the Civil Engineer Orlando Kohn Martinez, Director of Terravista.

The final of the County Championships took place at Eton on Sunday 13th January, between Hertfordshire and Middlesex. In the group stage, Middlesex had beaten The Stags in a close contest, so on paper it could have gone either way. On the day, Pete Cohen and Doug Foster overcame Ross Bryan and Guy Chapman 3 games to nil, Peter White and Ant Theodossi proved too strong for Nick Gill and Dexter Davis in a 3-0 victory, and Dave Mew and Mark Herring won in three against Ed Rose and Ryan Perrie.
Having had T-shirts printed specially for the tournament, Hertfordshire (aka ‘The Hertfordshire Regulation Service’), were keen to not disappoint, and celebrated with a well deserved afternoon and evening in the pub.

We would be much obliged if you could provide us information on how to get our hands on plans to build an Eton Fives court, as we plan to build one when we build the new Malay College Old Boys Association building at the end of this year."
A further encouraging e-mail has been recieved from Abdul Razak (MCOBA Secretariat)
“Reviving the Eton Fives at MCKK is a good idea, a niche for the College. Perhaps we should list all Old Boys who still remember the game, and still have the energy to play, to play a demo game during this years Speech and Sports Day sometime in mid-year 2008. It’s about publicity, and hopefully interest in the game will catch on.”

Everything was going smoothly until ten minutes after our 52 seater coach left Bilbao airport on the motorway. There was a crash from the back and the coach started shaking, followed by a yell from Dave who had just spotted the back left wheel bouncing past the coach down the middle lane! Our heroic driver wrestled with the wheel and managed to steer us to the hard shoulder where we awaited rescue and worked on establishing international relations with the Dutch ladies team. Every cloud...
We arrived at the Basque Pilota centre just in time for the opening ceremony, which included a Pilota demonstration - a huge court played with a fist-sized rock hard ball, like a cricket ball, and no gloves. Every shot was accompanied by an appaling sound of bruised flesh, and every few minutes the players would numb their hands in baths of ice-water. We were worried as we had to play these guys the next day, albeit at one-wall handball.
We took our learnings from Italy straight onto court, with Ady Lee and Peter White going 10-1 up against the Basques and come the singles, Pete Cohen taking a 9-0 lead over Ireland 1. In both games it was discovered that handball is not as straighforwards as we thought - a change in style from the opposition saw 15-11 and 15-9 losses, but the signs were encouraging. Dave Mew meanwhile counted himself fortunate with taking three points off 'Rookie' Wright, several-time world champion, in the singles. The Americans once more proving themselves a different class.
Kerry White flew the flag in the ladies tournament, winning her first ever game against Holland 1, and then going on to win her group beating Basque 2, booking a place in the semi-finals against USA 1. As with all of us, it was just the final kill shot that let her down, as she really gave the first seed a run around. Dom Redmond beat her Dutch counterpart in a thrilling 15-14 game, and in the U18s, Lia Redmond and Jess gave a good account of themselves - Jess' first ever game was against the current world champion!
The tournament ended with a fantastic 5 course banquet with free-flowing Rioja from the region, and an opportunity to plan future events with the other nations. In 2008 we will be going to Ireland, Italy and Spain, with possible tours to Holland and New York, as well as regular opportunites to play one-wall handball in London.
Do keep a lookout for the book: the working title at the moment is 'More about Boy' and it's due for publication on 13 Sept 2008 ('Roald Dahl Day'). I'm hoping that we may also be able to include a few of Dahl's letters to his mother in which he mentions playing fives and organising some of those trips to play against other schools.
In the early 90's schoolboys invented a lunchtime format for Fives that became known as "Two Up Two Down". There's a long story behind it, but in days gone by when there weren't many players at the school, there was a need for a 3 player version of the game that used the whole court. One Up Two Down was born. The class of 1994 had 4 players, so we extended the game to Two Up Two Down and the rules were gradually formalised and passed on to subsequent years.
This is the first ever Two Up Two Down Tournament and we're inviting people from any club to come along and join in.
One-wall handball is basically a very simplified version of fives, allowing people from around the world, with their different variations of handball, to compete on common ground. In a nutshell, there is one wall and a court. You have to hit a big blue bouncy rubber ball against wall and into the court – a rally generally follows. You can play singles or doubles, though this weekend, we only played doubles.
England's first pair was a made up of two Eton fives players – Pete Cohen and David Mew – and the second pair was Rugby – Dan Grant and Adrian Lee – and each adjusted to the game in various ways. The secret of handball is to be good at volleying and to have super-fast reactions near the front wall (where the Eton duo excelled), but you also have to be able to hit it low (the best shot is to hit the nick where the wall meets the floor) and powerfully – a Rugby skill. `This was the first time most of us had played competitively against other nations, so the whole weekend was a superb learning curve and we all noticeably improved as the weekend went on.
The experience was a little bit surreal, with an FA Cup-style draw done for the group stages on the Friday night – the Italian version however, consisted of 4 wenches fishing names out of various wine glasses – and then on Saturday the competition commenced. There was a flag procession for all the nations in front of 200 screaming fans and we were filmed for local television.
We would be competing against the Welsh, Irish, French, Belgians, Dutch, Basques, Italians and Americans. Pete and David had a good victory over the home team in the group stages and then put up a good fight in the plate. Dan and Ady also played very well, and although they lost all their group matches, fortunately they didn't finish with the wooden spoon, because they beat the Welsh on points!
In the end, England's first pair finished 16th out of 21 (having annihilated the Belgians) and our second finished 18th – after destroying the Netherlands in the Bowl competition. Although this may not seem too good, considering it was the third time we’d ever played, we were pretty happy with our progress. Things can only get better from here on and, come the world championships in 2009, the smart money is definitely going to be on us to win (probably)
In the end, the USA dominated and thrashed everyone, since one-wall handball is actually their native sport. It was a great experience and it was awesome to meet so many people from around the world. Thanks to Ady, the England team had by far the best kit and we made every other country jealous; Milan being the capital of fashion, we had to get our priorities right! But the highlight of the weekend had to be the French getting red-carded in the quarter finals for disorderly conduct. Excellent.

St.Andrew's Preparatory School, Eastbourne, Sussex
There were two courts at St Andrews, one Eton and one Rugby (I recollect playing doubles on the rugby court). Both were covered/roofed and were located outside the hall where the school assembled and next to the fairly broad asphalted playground which in turn was next to the northern entrance to the school (not the main driveway). On occasions they were used as exhibition halls for the boys' artworks but in my time they were fully functioning.
Charterhouse, Godalming, Surrey
1 court built on the eastern side of the hill by the bridge from Frith Hill Road to Brook Hall (which belonged to Hodgsonites I believe) and which would have been demolished at the time the old outlying Houses were sold off for development and to finance the current
new Houses within the school grounds.
Cambridge I (James O'Callaghan and Mike Birkett) won the tournament in an extremely close five game match with Oxford II (Will Betts and Chris Michaels). The scores were 12-4, 4-12, 12-3, 14-15, 12-4

I remembered there were some fives courts at my old school, Woodbridge in Suffolk and sure enough there was an entry. However I was there from 1954 until 1959 and I'm sure they were still there when I left. There were three courts built along the side of the school hall so they definitely were not demolished in the 1940s
To my knowledge there were never any competitive games played while I was there. They were in a dilapidated condition and were mostly used to practice tennis strokes. (Webmaster: Website court entry adjusted)

As a counter-balance to the report posted on 17th August - Planning permission has been applied for to build a new Eton Court at The Pilgrims' School, Winchester
I have just heard of plans to close the school and demolish all the buildings except the 16th Century schoolmasters house. I can only presume that this would include the fives courts.
A few months ago Melvyn reported
"There are three `fives' courts under the technology block at The Thomas Alleyne School Stevenage Herts. They are at least 75 years old as the building dates from the Edwardian period. The courts were built at the same time as the classroom above and were in use until the 1960s. I remember them being at least 2 storeys high. They are probably Eton fives courts. They look like filled in tunnels and were being used as Staff parking spaces when I last went to the school.
The responsible authority is Herts County Council Education department."
The Annual Meeting to determine the make-up of the League and fixtures for 2007-2008 was held last evening at Westminster School.
