The Lyceum Alpinum very kindly hosted our week's tour to play fives and cricket. The school is situated in the quiet and picturesque village of Zuoz, 5,600 feet above sea level. Pupils at the Lyceum Alpinum study academically for entrance to Swiss or German university while English games are compulsory. The games master, Bob Felce, is assisted by coaches in cricket, hockey and fives.
From a fives perspective, it was extremely pleasing to see many of the Lyceum boys enjoying their fives and a considerable number playing to a very respectable standard. Tony Hughes must take some credit for his considerable efforts over the years as must the Zuoz Old Boys whose interest and enthusiasm have kept the game going despite the lack of external opposition. Benny Oei deserves special praise for his dedication to the school and in particular to the fives. It was a privilege for us to get to know this charming man and also a pleasure to play fives with him. Another of the old boys, Christof Marpmann, drove from Dusseldorf to play fives on the Friday before the cricket festival and was up early on Monday to play again before the long return home.
So, fives in Switzerland and Germany is more than surviving and as important is in excellent hands. We at harrow very much hope that a combination of players from the Lyceum Alpinum and the Zuoz Old Boys will come to the Schools Championships and the Kinnaird Cup next March and we look forward to reciprocating their marvellous hospitality.
