The competition was first played at Harrow during the 1996/97 season and nineteen pairs form twelve schools took part. It had been a long standing wish of the EFA Committee and Graham Turnbull in particular to hold a competition in which each pair consisted of a current schoolboy and an old boy. The tournament is named after Graham Turnbull who did so much for Fives and the EFA. Kitty Turnbull donated and presented the Trophy at the inaugural tournament.
