AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
FOR THE KINNAIRD CUP
'In 1924 Lord Kinnaird gave a challenge cup to be competed for by the Old Boys' Fives clubs, and though it lapsed for a couple of years after its inception, the building of the covered Fives court at Queen's Club in 1927 set it on its feet once more. In 1931 the Kinnaird Cup regulations were revised and the title of the competition was altered to 'Amateur Championship for the Kinnaird Cup', thus giving it a larger showing of importance'. The Lord Kinnaird, K.T., KBE. Extract from the Annual Report for 1971-1972 - "The Committee records with deep regret the death of Lord Kinnaird, who has been Patron of the Association since before the war. In his youth he did much to popularise the game, and his donation of the Kinnaird Cup has for almost half a century inspired many to enter for the Amateur Championship, and has had a very profound influence in raising standards of play generally".
1924-1931 the Kinnaird Cup was an Old Boys Competition, the winners representing their clubs
From 1932 onwards it became the Amateur Championship and a new competition, called the 'Queen's Club Competition', and run on the lines of the Bath Club Cup at Squash Rackets, was started between the Old Boys' Clubs.
A Plate Competition was first introduced in 1968.
In 1978 Miss Debbie Till became the first lady to take part in the Kinnaird.
SAAB (Gt.Britain) Ltd. sponsored the Kinnaird in the season 1981/82 as part of a major Championship agreement to include, the Midland, Northern and London Tournaments. A SAAB Grand Masters final for the six leading pairs was won by A Hughes and R J Lambert (Old Edwardians).
Ballantine's sponsored the Championship for the 1983/84 - 1985/86 seasons.
In 1984 J W Biggs (Old Olavian) presented the Pepperpot Trophy for the winners of the Plate 'A' Competition.
