The League
(Douglas Keeble Cup)
The Old Olavians and Dick Spooner, the first League Secretary, were responsible for the successful inauguration of the League Championship. Five Clubs, Old Berkhamstedians, Old Citizens, Old Cholmeleians, Old Edwardians and Old Olavians competed during the 1971/72 season for a Cup generously donated by Olavian Doug Keeble.
Due to the popularity of the League a second division was introduced in 1976/77 and a third in 1980/81. Tom Wood (Old Citizen) presented the Tom Wood 'Stirrup' Cup for the winners of the third division.
A fourth division was played for ten years between 1988/89 and 1997/98.
A Northern League was created in 1990/91 in the Midlands for those players unable to travel to London. The teams consisted of a mixture of boys, university students, masters and Old Boys from Wolverhampton, Birmingham, and Shrewsbury. It survived for two years under the guidance of Grant Williams (Old Cholmeleian). Wolverhampton were comfortable winners in both years.
