    Peparatory Schools Championship

    2000-2001

The 34th Preparatory Schools Tournament Sponsored by HSBC at Eton on Monday 19th March 2001

We were at Eton again this year for the 34th Prep. Schools Competition and were blessed with a beautifully sunny day. Thirty-two pairs took part. The pool matches recorded one or two shocks with Ludgrove 3 defeating Sunningdale 1 and Highgate 4 proving too good for all. The last eight were composed of four Highgate pairs, three Ludgrove pairs and the Summer Fields 1st pair. It was excellent to see Summer Fields reaching the semi finals only to be cut down to size by a powerful Highgate duo. The second semi- final was a marathon affair with Ludgrove squeezing home against Highgate 2 12-9 in the third game.

The final was one sided for Highgate I (Alex o'Callaghan and Max Little) were a steady , precise pair and none could touch them. Many congratulations to Highgate for once again producing an excellent team and an outstanding first pair.

The Marston Plate was thoroughly well contested with Sunningdale defeating Ludgrove 2 in a close run final. The standard of play in the competition has improved hugely over recent years.

Many thanks to all the schools for helping to make the day run so smoothly. There was not the slightest disagreement or controversial moment throughout the day. All credit is due to all the boys who took part. Finally I would like to record our thanks and best wishes to Chris Arnold who retired from Belmont this season. He has been a wonderful support for Eton Fives and a stalwart for the Prep Schools competition.
