On Sunday 1st of December, the ninth Beginner's Individual Tournament was held by REFCA at Harrow School. Sixty-five girls and boys took part, entering from the following schools: Emanuel, Uppingham, Oakham, Lancing College, St.Olave's, High Wycombe, Orley Farm and Westminster. There were two categories - beginners from this September, and a more experienced category for those who have been playing for longer.
These competitions see every player, from whatever school, paired up at random with a different partner and opposition for each of six one-game matches. Once all six matches have been played, the highest scoring four players from each Tournament go forward to the respective finals.
The Beginners Tournament was won by : Ben Cagan (Westminster) & Charlie Paxton (Uppingham), who defeated Sophie Palmer (Lancing College) & George Pender (Oakham School) in the Final, 10-7.
The advanced tournament (U15's and below) was won by: Rahul Desai (St.Olave's) & Richard Luke (Orley Farm) who defeated Tim Saunders (St.Olave's) & Scott Bennett (St.Olave's) in the Final, 10-5.
For many, this was their first competition or contact with players from other teams. It was great to see representatives from so many different schools, including newcomers Oakham and Uppingham, collaborate in scratch pairings and to see their confidence rise so much in just one afternoon. Congratulations to all the schools for fielding such enthusiastic and talented teams. Thank you also to Harrow Fives Club for allowing the use of their courts - so good to see all fifteen courts in such good condition and in full use all afternoon.
