This year’s tournament saw a healthy turn out with seven schools being represented and some excellent Fives being played. The standard of Fives showed greater strength in depth than previous years and was competitive throughout.
The group stages saw the top eight pairs qualifying for the main competition with Summer Fields leading the way by getting all three of their pairs through. They were joined by two Highgate pairs and representatives from Ludgrove, Sunningdale and Orley Farm who had put out Highgate 2 in the group stages.
The semi-finals were contested between Summer Fields and Highgate and the final threw together the outstanding pairs on the day of Summer Fields 1 (F.Fairhead and M.Koe) and Highgate 1 (J.Berriman and C.Noble). It was a mouth-watering prospect with the Summer Fields pair going in as slight favourites against their younger opposition in a bid to halt Highgate’s domination of the event.
The final was a close fought affair with little between the pairs but as in the years before Highgate prevailed 2-1 in the best of three games. Both pairs deserve congratulations for their play on the day and it was great to see such a well contested final.
In the plate competitions the Orley Farm pair of D.Somper and Z.Smith emerged victorious in the Plate B for quarter-final losers and Highgate 2 (Z.Freud and B.Kovar) won the plate A for first round losers defeating the Berkhamsted pair of James Hawes and Alasdair Leighton in the final.
It only remains to pass on my thanks once again to all the coaches for bringing their teams down and for making it for such an enjoyable and successful day.
